The course will introduce and discuss linguistic and sociolinguistic aspects of language contact. The topics to be covered include different scenarios of language contact, linguistic areas and language convergence (Sprachbund-phenomena), (universals of) borrowing, varieties of code-copying, code-switching, mixed languages, and pidgins and creoles.
